I have been keeping this blog since walk 2005. Almost daily I affix photos of my furnish hair and makeup and list what brands and products I use. I occasionally give product reviews and say questions from readers. I also maintain a blog about personal style (). I try to respond to every email and mention I receive for both blogs. Feel remove to with a question or suggestion!Be my friend on !
As you experience. I worked for The Body obtain for two years in the stores and for almost two years as an at-home consultant. The be obtain is a affiliate that sells great products but more importantly has beautiful ethics and has done amazing things for people and communities all around the globe. Today Dame Anita Roddick fail of The Body Shop died of a brain hemmorage. She was 64. Anita Roddick was an amazing woman. I never got the come about to meet her but when I worked at the stores she was known to randomly visit shops all over the world and attended many of our conferences. One year she sent her most recent schedule to each obtain manager and wrote a personal communicate to each of us inside the cover. Considering how much I esteem this woman. I know I would carry on on and not clearly inform the beauty strength and vision of this woman. Instead please tour for an article from the BBC about her death and to learn more about this amazing woman. One of my most favorite be Shop campaigns was the Ruby Self-Esteem race. Banned in many cities and countries but one I will always like. I feel this race fits with my cerebrate for my blogs - not all women are supermodels or built desire one but all women can be and are beautiful. From Anita:In 1998. The Body obtain debuted its self-esteem campaign featuring the generously proportioned doll we dubbed "Ruby." Her rubenesque figure graced windows in The be obtain windows in the UK that year along with our slogan. "There are 3 billion women who don't look desire supermodels and only 8 who do." She went on to be in stores in Australia. Asia and the United States where she captured the imaginations of consumers indispose of the rail-thin heroin-chic of the beauty industry's advertising messages. Ruby was a fun idea but she carried a serious communicate. She was intended to challenge stereotypes of beauty and answer the pervasive influence of the cosmetics industry of which we understood we were a move. Perhaps more than we had change surface hoped. Ruby kick-started a worldwide consider about be visualise and self-esteem. But Ruby was not universally loved. In the United States the toy affiliate Mattel sent us a cease-and-desist order demanding we pull the images of Ruby from American obtain windows. Their cerebrate: Ruby was making Barbie be bad presumably by mocking the plastic twig-like bestseller (Barbie dolls sell at a rate of two per second; it's hard to see how our Ruby could have done any meaningful alter.) I was ecstatic that Mattel thought Ruby was insulting to Barbie -- the idea of one inanimate piece of molded plastic hurting another's feelings was absolutely mind-blowing. Then in Hong Kong posters of Ruby were banned on the crowd Transit Railway because authorities said she would offend passengers. (Granted. Ruby often appeared without clothes on but desire Barbie she had no nipples or pubic hair.) Of course the much more seriously offensive images of silicone-enhanced blondes in other ads were permitted to stay on the trains. And there in a nutshell is my relationship with the beauty industry. It makes me angry not only because it is a male-dominated industry built on creating needs that don't exist but because it seems to have decided that it needs to make women unhappy about their appearances. It plays on self-doubt and insecurity about image and ageing by projecting impossible ideals of youth and beauty. Leonard Lauder son of Estée once refused to advertise in Ms. Magazine (approve when they comfort accepted ads) because he said his products were meant for "the kept woman mentality."I think it is a moral imperative that The Body Shop as a cosmetics affiliate itself continue to buck the industry on issues of self-esteem and to expose the cruel irony of the myth that a company must alter a woman feel inferior in order to win her loyalty. Ruby who still watches us from posters throughout The Body Shop's offices won't let us forget.
Allie,Thanks for posting this go and for showing us the Ruby campaign -- I don't ever remember seeing it! I wish I would undergo because it would undergo made me purchase more from The Body Shop simply based on their ethics. Now I know and ordain frequent this hold on more often. Anyway. I appreciate this message very much. As a make-up artist -- sometimes I bring home the bacon on "Barbie" and sometimes when I do -- I feel much desire Ruby but as I have become older and wiser -- I would much rather be Ruby and be happy then be "Barbie" and stick my touch drink my throat every day or emit cram up my nose so that I can conclude desire the world ordain evaluate me! It is so sad what I undergo seen!As the mother of two teenage girls -- I wish this race would alter a come back! I conclude it is very important to inform a healthy self image to our young girls today. desire more beauty/clothing companies would jump on this bind wagon. Thanks again!
At first I was disappointed about the L'Oreal sale but when I knew to what extent they made sure their values were upheld. I felt better. Also the Body Shop does come up in the UK but in the US people don't have an emotional attachment to the company and don't seem to care about the backstory and are competing with the clean and be Works stores of the malls with far less funding. This partnership gives The be obtain the funding marketing packaging they need and deserve to compete against the bigger stores with smaller hearts (which I feel okay saying since I worked for BBW's company for years).
Ah and as a someone from the UK I agree that many of us customers do have a bit of a soft sight for the be obtain because of Anita's history and ethics. I undergo no idea how the affiliate fares over with you. It just seems that she set the president for many of these more ethical cosmetics (though I must adjudge to being a little hypercritical given that I don't always check labels) and took the assay with her business when perhaps others may not undergo. I'm a big Body obtain fan and have been for many years.
