"Your Gray Hair - Where Did They Come From?" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2008-10-18 05:58:53

Sam has just noticed a strand of gray hair at his temple and is a bit worried. Is it the time to declare his innings or he still has the power and the will to go for more? Gray hair has been an interrogatory issue for quite long. These days people have their own choice when it comes to graying of hair. They can leave it as such and celebrate the natural look or dye them to conceal their graying and sport their ever young looks. To prevent gray hair is also one of the options which people are trying out but gray hair treatment is yet to deliver confirmed results. Health heredity and environmental factors are considered to be the factors involved in contributing to the graying of your hair but the main cause is attributed to aging. It starts when our body stops producing melanin pigment which is responsible for giving color to the hair. Each strand of your hair grows out of a follicle that has cells filled with melanin called melanocytes. Melanocytes pass melanin to adjoining cells called keratinocytes which produce keratin - the chief component of hair. When keratinocytes undergo their scheduled death they retain melanin. The pigment visible in hair and in the skin lies in these dead keratinocyte bodies. With loss of keratinocytes the pigment of hair is gone. Also with a period of time the amount of melanin in the keratinocytes decreases. Gray hair is simply hair without melanin. The declining presence of melanin also supposed to be contributing to lack of moisture in gray or white hair. As a result hair becomes lighter in color and its texture gets dryer and coarser. In actual hair never turns gray. It is the pigment melanin which is absent in them which gives them the look. Every day hairs fall out and are replaced by new ones. At any given time about 85% to 90% of hairs are actively growing while the rest are in a resting state. A strand grows for two to four years and then enters into a resting state for about two to four months. After the resting phase it falls out and is replaced by a new hair. On an average most people lose about 50 to 100 strands of head hair daily. There is currently no scientific way to detect as to when a particular cell or group of cells will stop producing melanin. In the initiation stages of graying the melanocytes are still present but inactive. Later on they decrease in number. This natural process of graying can begin as early as our teens. In most people however graying first becomes noticeable in their late 30s. Some researchers have shown that gender plays a role in graying. The average male starts to gray around age 30 while women typically began to notice lighter strands around age 35. Genetics are also a contributing factor. In some families many members develop white hair in their 20s. So is the way you live your life you are likely to get a gray head much faster if you are prone to get tense. In fact a tense lifestyle is known to cause hair loss and even baldness in extreme cases. Today there are numerous products in the market which promise to prevent gray hair. If you are not comfortable with your shade of gray opt for dying of hair or bear your natural look that defines your maturity and wisdom. However try natural treatments before you turn to chemicals.

"It's Not the Age - It's the Attitude" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2008-08-18 18:09:50

My dear sweet grandmother who married at 15 and raised 6 sons alongside my grandfather was quoted as saying. "Attitude is just how you see things." She was much-loved and had an opinion on everything. After my grandfather passed away ever the possibility-thinker she put herself through college and then seminary and became a female pastor in a male-denominated denomination. Another quote she was famous for. "Don't give up because of age or the naysayers." Another important ingredient is to be young at heart. I really can't believe some of the things I hear people say. A 35-year-old professional sports player feels desire the oldest member of the team-maybe because he is the oldest member of the team. But when the young guys in the locker room are listening to their I-Pods he hasn't a clue how to join them. It takes his daughter getting him in touch with the latest technology to help him conclude like one of the guys but he gets razzed in the locker dwell. Why should the latest technology be only for the youngest of the young? Why do some 50-year-olds cop out with the "I'm too old for this stuff" when 70- and 80-year-olds have tapped into the latest resources? If it's just not your thing say that not "I'm too old." Nothing warms my heart more than a 20-something listening to Tony Bennett the 6-year-old noted for having the largest collection of Elvis memorabilia or seeing an 80-year-old man wearing a ponytail out jogging listening to his I-Pod. Because it's not about the ageit's the attitudeof being an individual while remaining young at heart. Whether you embrace technology or not isn't really the point although embracing the world as your own is. It's about not letting society put you in a box. Don't furnish it away buying into the idea that everything's for the young and your time has past because too often we evaluate these aging generalities as our own because it's easier. "People my age don't do that" is a great escapeso people evaluate. a boomer. I've rather disliked being put in that box my entire life. But it's only so people can sell us something and while that can be a good thing it can also be detrimental. While it can be cool to join together and share our history when we categorize ourselves in a certain age assort totally we stop thinking for ourselves and we stop being ourselves. And while I have a lot of boomer sisters online doing great things for this age groupI applaud thempeople often lump me in with that assort but my message has never really been about an age. For example on a recent cruise I noticed the cruise lie instead of playing a set of soothing jazz music in a martini lounge was playing a song from my childhood. It seemed highly-inappropriate for the venue. Their marketing department must have concluded that the majority of their passengers were now boomers and this meant they wanted to hear songs from their youth. Must we only embrace the music we heard when we were kids? Don't people have more diverse When I was a young woman. I was drawn to older women who saw me for the individual that I am. Now that I'm an "older" woman. I'm drawn to younger women. Maybe because I don't have children. I see them as women and not as daughtersI see them for the individual they are. But one of my role models was an older woman who had 2 daughters close to my age but you never would have known that. She treated me like an individual and not as somebody the age of one of her daughters. Life shouldn't be about the ageit's about the attitudeno matter our age. Kathy Holmes writes women's fiction with attitude a believer in second chances and that every little girl needs to experience her daddy. She has published her first novel. "Real Women feature Red," set on a Caribbean cruise and a free affiliate Ebook. "Cyn's Fabulous Guide to Cruising." She has also published a nonfiction book. "Myths of the Fatherless," about her jaunt to find and meet her father. To sight out more see her web site and blog at
